Two familiar faces from Celtic’s recent past have earned well-deserved recognition at the 2025 EFL Awards, with Chris Davies and Tomoki Iwata both shortlisted in major categories. The former Celtic midfielder and the current Birmingham City manager have enjoyed stellar seasons.

Chris Davies, who took over as Birmingham City manager in June, has enjoyed an extraordinary debut season in charge. In just his first campaign as a manager, he has led the Blues to the EFL League One title with six games to spare. The club has already amassed an impressive 95 points, smashing the record for league wins in a season with 29.

This achievement has earned Davies a place on the shortlist for the EFL League One Manager of the Season award. His achievement is all the more remarkable given that this is his first managerial role. He will face tough competition from the likes of Wrexham’s Phil Parkinson, Charlton Athletic’s Nathan Jones, and Leyton Orient’s Richie Wellens, but Davies’ impact at Birmingham has been undeniable.

Meanwhile, Tomoki Iwata who joined Birmingham from Celtic last summer, has also been recognised for his impressive performances. Iwata has been an integral part of the team’s success, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 40 appearances. His contributions have been crucial in Birmingham’s promotion-winning season, and he is now in the running for the EFL League One Player of the Season award. His technical ability and leadership in the midfield have made him a fan favourite at St. Andrew’s, and his performances have only continued to impress as the season has went on.

For Celtic fans, it’s been exciting to see Iwata’s development since his time at at the Hoops. After a disappointing spell at Celtic, Iwata has settled in well at Birmingham, proving that his talents extend well beyond the Scottish Premiership. His role in helping Birmingham secure promotion has certainly not gone unnoticed.

As both Davies and Iwata continue to shine in their new roles, it’s clear that their time at Celtic played a significant part in their growth. As the 2025 EFL Awards approach, both will be hoping to add more silverware. Whatever the outcome, Celtic supporters will undoubtedly take pride in the duos achievements this season.
