At the beginning of last summer, not many knew where Celtic fullback – Tony Ralston’s career was headed.

Having had a few loan spells at the likes of Dundee United and St Johnstone, added in with the fact he had seen barely any game time under Neil Lennon, it looked like the academy graduate’s future could have been elsewhere with his contract also coming to an end.

However, he was handed a lifeline or a further one-year extension, and he has certainly taken that chance under new Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou.

The 22-year old has put in consistent performances and become a key figure in the side, which is slowly starting to click as momentum continues to build.

One man who is familiar with the right-back position and the pressures it comes with at Parkhead is Mark Wilson, and he was full of praise for Ralston’s performances this campaign.

So much so that the former Dundee United and Celtic full-back believes that Ralston has turned into a player which Ange Postecoglou has grown to ‘rely on’.

Amazing, especially where he has come from,” he said on Clyde One Superscoreboard.

Started the season; not his fault that he was the number one right-back and took plenty of criticism for it, but he showed what a good player he is.

“And, to add goals to your game as a full-back just elevates you to a different level.

“I think he has been outstanding this season.

“I know he went through a wee tricky period where people were saying, ‘He is back to the Tony Ralston of a few years ago’, but he has come through it.

“He plays every week, and Ange Postecoglou is quietly starting to rely on him every week.“

Adding another goal to his tally on Wednesday night, you would imagine with his displays; the club will be keen to tie Ralston down to a fresh set of terms.

Ultimately it would be a well-deserved reward for his contribution this season, and hopefully, we can continue to see that as the campaign progresses.

  1. To right and i bet Ralston would make a great right sided holding midfielder but saying that a attacking midfielder he is a all rounder that is what Ange Postecoglou sees in Ralston and he gives a 110% in every game…
