FORMER CELTIC boss Tony Mowbray is said to be leading the race for the Sunderland job after Alex Neil is set to take a job at Stoke City.

The Championship club were without their manager for the 1-0 home defeat to Norwich, as he was locked in discussions with Stoke.

The Daily Mail report that Tony Mowbray should take over once Sunderland’s managerial status is confirmed, and the former Celtic boss will be back in a job after leaving Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season.

Mowbray was the manager at Celtic between 2009 and 2010, in between Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon. His appointment was branded as a mistake by the Chairman at the time.

After starting the season off well at Celtic, it all went downhill, and, by January, Rangers led by a large margin. He was eventually sacked at the end of the season; the job was simply too big for the manager.
