IT has been a tough road for former Celtic star Shaun Maloney since he ventured into management.
After leaving the Hoops‘ under–20s coaching set–up, Maloney had a stint with Belgium‘s national team as an assistant manager before a short–lived and ultimately unsuccessful spell in charge of Hibernian. However, many will argue that he wasn’t given the time that he deserved after he brought a great style of play to the club, but the results just weren’t coming.
Despite interest from Dundee, Maloney ventured south and took the reins at Wigan Athletic in January.
The Championship season has been a difficult one for Maloney and his Latics, with the club suffering financial difficulties leading to late wages and resulting points deductions. This has resulted in a lacklustre campaign with just four wins in 17 league games, leaving them bottom of the table.
Saturday’s 1–1 draw with Reading has sealed their fate and the club will be relegated back to League One for the 2023/24 season.

It leaves Maloney with a 28.6% win rate in his managerial career so far and the Celtic hero will be hoping to rebuild Wigan and guide them back to the Championship at the second time of asking.
It’s a shame, many had high hopes for Maloney when he stepped into management. He’s still young and has a lot of learning to do, hopefully, it’ll pick up soon.
