It has been reported that former Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre is set to retire from football after being released by Marathon in his homeland of Honduras [Daily Record].

Whenever you mention his name, many Celtic fans will smile as the player had such a great relationship with the support during his two stints at the club which amounted to eight years of service in total.

During his time at Celtic, Emilio won every domestic honour available and had a standout first season winning three player of the year awards being recognised by his peers and the press.

The Honduran took to Instagram to post a message which said, “Thank you my God for all your blessings, more than 19 years of football career, many titles, two World Cups and I know that many more good things are coming.”

He suffered a horrific injury during his second season at the club with the defender breaking his ankle during a match at Pittodrie which ruled him out until early January.

The player would go on to play an important role in helping win the title and would go on to help Celtic qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League the following season.

Emilio was a trusted player during his time at the club playing regularly under Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers.

With Kieran Tierney beginning to feature more regularly for Celtic from 2015 onwards, the Honduran left the club in 2017 only to return the following summer on a one-year deal.

Everyone at Celts Are Here wishes Emilio the very best for the future!
