Plenty of opinions have been raised after Celtic’s defeat to Hearts, leaving current title race talk a very real thing. Now, one former Celtic midfielder has chimed in with his views and has issued a warning ahead of the January transfer window.
It was always going to be a tough start to life in Glasgow for Wilfried Nancy when you looked at his first fixtures: League leaders Hearts at home, AS Roma in the Europa League and a League Cup final against St Mirren.
Yes, he has fallen at the first hurdle, but signs were there in the first-half of Sunday’s defeat to indicate that this squad will gel under his leadership.
The issue is, he won’t have the luxury of time on his side to allow things to click. The Hoops have six games across all competitions within the next 30 days in a packed festive schedule.
It’s clear that the current squad need reinforcements in the door. But will the board actually back their manager in January?
One ex-Celt has his doubts.
Craig Burley, who was at the Hoops from 1997 until 1999, has had his say:
“Celtic have money. But part of the ire of the lads, the Celtic support, is that the board won’t spend. They spend enough to win the Scottish title, but they won’t spend to take them to another level. But they are still in better shape than everybody else. He should have success there.”
The former Scottish international now works for ESPN in America as a broadcaster and is familiar with Nancy from his time in the MLS at Columbus Crew and CF Montréal.
