KRIS COMMONS has been discussing the Scottish national side and how they struggled to put away Moldova at the weekend. Steve Clarke’s men won 1-0 on the night against the minnows and it left fans with not much confidence of an upset against Austria.

While talking about Scotland’s result, Kris gave an insight into what it was like in the dressing room as a Celtic player when the expectation was there not just to win but win well.

The former Celtic midfielder claimed Neil Lennon told his players if they didn’t go win a game by four or five goals they would get hammered in the press.

“Neil Lennon used to say before certain games at Celtic that if we didn’t win by four or five we’d get hammered in THE PRESS.” Kris told Record Sport.

“It also goes with the territory Clarke is now in. Constructive criticism is one thing but there are too many people who moan for the sake of it and go over the top in what they say.

“Scotland got the win on Saturday against an opponent who had some decent players.

“Yes, Denmark last Wednesday was an absolute doing and the criticism was probably merited, but Moldova was a case of job done.

“I still think the team are in a good place.”

Neil signed Kris for Celtic during his first run as Celtic boss. The midfielder was fantastic at times but I don’t think he ever had two good seasons in a row for the club.

The press being used as fuel to try and get his team to play also seems counterproductive. Does half the team care about what Keith Jackson writes about them on any given day of the week? Absolutely not.

Neil did become consumed by the media’s portrayal of him in his second stint as Celtic manager. Ironically now the former Celtic boss is trying to use that same media to angle himself for a new job.
