After four very successful seasons at Celtic Park, Dedryck Boyata left the club at the end of last season in order to join Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin on a free transfer after his contract ran out. And that was after the club had rejected a £9-million bid from Fulham for the defender less than a year earlier.
It looks like the Belgian has adjusted to his new surroundings seamlessly. He has made 15 appearances for the German side this season and even found the back of the net on one occasion. And according to manager Jurgen Klinsmann, the 29-year-old is one of the best defenders in Europe right now.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, the German legend said:
“For me, Dedryck Boyata is one of Europe’s best defenders at the moment. He’s at the top of his game and he’s been absolutely terrific for me. Since I arrived here, at every training session and every game he’s been inspirational.”
Celtic should not be too worried though as they have the pairing of Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer at the club right now. The two have done brilliantly this season and might very well be the best centre-back pairing in all of Scotland at the moment.
As result, the only thing that the Hoops should regret about Boyata’s departure is the fact that they lost him for free less than a year after rejecting a £9-million offer.
