Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew will miss his current side, Dundee United’s, visit to Parkhead this weekend.

As quoted by The Courier, after coming off with an injury issue in United’s fixture against Hibernian on Thursday night, his manager Tam Courts confirmed that the veteran central defender’s knock wasn’t as bad as first feared.

However, he did rule out the 35-year old making his return to Parkhead, with the fixture between the two sides coming too early for Mulgrew to face his former team.

“The boys were in this morning recovering, and the initial feeling is one where, particularly with Charlie, it’s not as bad as first feared.

“But both are muscular injuries, and both players are feeling optimistic at the moment.

“I think Charlie will struggle for Sunday, but he’s a guy who knows his body, and, fortunately for us, we were able to get him off in the nick of time against Hibs.

“That’s a relief.”

During his time with the club, Mulgrew was a well-liked character around the place and has continued to speak highly on the occasions it has been possible, covering several TV games on the likes of Sky Sports and Pass To Paradise last campaign.

The defender won’t be receiving any sort of reception from the home crowd, though, with Courts ruling him out of this game.

Some fans might have seen this as an interesting opportunity to see Mulgrew back at Parkhead, facing Celtic for the first time since his exit.

But it could also be seen as a slight boost for Ange Postecoglou and his side, as United prepare for a trip to Glasgow without a key player and captain.
