Former Motherwell Boss and Ibrox managerial flop Stuart McCall has given his hot spicy take on David Turnbull after the former Celtic target made his first appearance for the club in eight months.
David was on the brink of his Celtic move when the deal collapsed due to his Celtic medical unearthing a knee injury which required immediate surgery.
The midfilder has had to come to terms with the move falling through and being on the sidelines for a long time. Coming back against St Mirren, while not getting the result he wanted, would have been a big moment.
Now as he looks to get fully match fit and start finding the form that made Celtic sit up and take notice, McCall is telling the player NOT to join Celtic if the deal is revived.
“First and foremost, I want to see David Turnbull back playing games, getting back to his best and improving,” McCall told RecordSport.
“I’m sure his mind was messed up at the time [of the Celtic move], but life tests you.
“He’s got terrific ability and I think he’s got the right mindset. He’s a real switched on kid and, from Motherwell’s point of view, they’ll want to try and keep him.
“Do you want to leave and go to a club where you might be a squaddie or you might get sent out on loan because you want to get a few more grand?
“I think it’s an important part of your development – not going to clubs just for the sake of it to say I’ve joined this club or that club, and sitting on the bench or playing in the under-21s.”
Celtic are likely going to need at least one midfielder to battle it out for a place in their squad next season. McCall is asking Turnbull not to be ambitious when we know if it was the Ibrox club who came calling he’d be recommending David go.
No, you’re not guaranteed a game at Celtic but if you believe in your own ability and put the work in then it’s there for the taking.
