Norway legend John Arne Riise has made it clear he believes Kristoffer Ajer is on course for a big money move away from Celtic in the not too distant future.

Speaking to Herald Scotland, the former Liverpool star believes the Celtic defender is destined for the top but not before Celtic get what the player is worth.

“He’s a good player but he’s going to be even better,” said Riise.

“He’s a winner and I expect him to move on to a bigger club eventually, which is fine as long as Celtic get what they deserve.

“Providing Celtic tie players like him down on contracts then they have the right model because I don’t like to see players moving to big clubs for free once they are out of contract.”

Speaking about the free contract rule, Riise believes Ajer will do the right thing by Celtic if he does move on in the future.

“I don’t think Kris will do that because he knows how much Celtic have done for him, but he’s the next big thing and he’s good enough to play in the Premier League.”

The players contract isn’t up until 2022, so there’s no real talk of Ajer walking away for nothing when the time comes.

Riise bringing that up is a bit strange.

Kristoffer Ajer and Celtic have played the long game when it comes to his Parkhead career. Brought in as a 17-year-old, the midfielder turned defender had to wait for his chance in the team – even spending time at Kilmarnock before making his Celtic breakthrough.

The lad’s passion and desire to give Celtic his best has made him a firm fan favourite.
