JOHN O’SHEA revealed he was close to signing for Celtic in the early stage of his career speaking before the Liam Miller tribute match.

O’Shea who lined up for the Manchester United legends admitted he could have been lining up for Celtic back in the day when he was ‘very close’ to joining the Parkhead club.

Celtic have always had their eye on young Irish talent and so did a Sir Alex Ferguson lead United.

O’Shea was wanted by both Celtic and Manchester United as a young lad during the 99/00 season.

Celtic were almost there on securing a deal but when Manchester United came in the defender opted to move to Old Trafford.

The rest is history – John spent 11 seasons at Manchester United before moving to Sunderland in 2011 for £4.5million.

On nearly wearing the Hoops, O’Shea said “I was very close to going to play with him (Lian Miller) at Celtic just before I joined United.

“We’d been successful with Ireland at Under-16 level, winning the European Championships, and I was very close to going up to Celtic after that, but in the end I chose United.”

Former Celtic, Manchester United and Ireland players have all got together in support of Liam Miller who sadly passed away earlier this year suffering from pancreatic cancer.

The event which took place today will hopefully raise a lot of money for a number of good causes.
