Former Soccer Saturday guest, Charlie Nicholas believes Celtic have improved their team by bringing Shane Duffy to the club.

The player is now in Glasgow to start his Celtic career after the international break and is likely to get to work right away.

Duffy comes in after not featuring as much for Brighton, Nicholas believes it’s because Graham Potter wanted his centre-backs to be able to pass it out from the back where Shane is more of an old school, clear your lines defender.

Nicholas is a glass half empty sort of guy so even when he praises the signing he takes a dig at the Scottish league while he does it.

“Shane Duffy’s biggest challenges as a Celtic player will be in the Europa League games because very rarely do the team get challenged domestically, especially at Parkhead.” He wrote in the Express as cited by RecordSport.

“The Irishman was at his best as part of a back four at Brighton when he partnered Lewis Dunk.

“When Graham Potter took over and wanted a centre-half to pass the ball out of a three-man defence, Duffy found himself out of the team.

“He is an old-fashioned centre-back. That’s what Celtic needed and now they have one.

“He is not the quickest but he will improve Celtic and give them a bit more steel.”

Celtic will start back their SPFL campaign this week with a trip to Ross County followed by a visit to Paisley to take on St Mirren. The bhoys get the chance to close the gap by playing one of the postponed fixtures from earlier this term – Duffy could feature in one or both.
