Former Hearts boss Steven Naismith has tipped Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan to establish himself as a key figure at Parkhead despite stiff competition for places in Brendan Rodgers’ star-studded squad.
The 26-year-old, who joined the Hoops in the summer, has already shown flashes of brilliance, most notably during a stunning display in the 5-0 victory over Ross County. McCowan scored a goal and registered three assists in that game, staking his claim for more regular involvement in the first team.
However, he was left out of the starting XI for Celtic’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene, Naismith highlighted McCowan’s quality and backed him to eventually secure a starring role at Celtic.
“I think you need to get used to it. Going to a big club, the demands, competition for places, for me he’s a top player.
“Celtic have signed him at a great time.
“This first year he can be that bit-part but as he grows and becomes comfortable with his surroundings, I expect him to be a really big player.”
Since making the move to Celtic, McCowan has featured in 11 games, quickly becoming a fan favourite for his direct playing style and attacking contributions. His standout performance against Ross County underlined his ability to impact games, seamlessly linking midfield and attack while creating scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Despite his impressive form, McCowan faces an uphill battle to secure consistent minutes. Celtic’s midfield is stacked with talent, including established stars like Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate, as well as £11.5m summer signing Arne Engels. Paulo Bernardo also seems to be ahead of the players in the pecking order.
There’s no pressure on McGown beenado cost £6,000,000 Engils cist£11,000,000 they didn’t set the price there football and did i can see the difference in bernardo since last season I think he justified his place in the starting line up before McGowan it’s close Bernardo has great vision and running ability and great dead ball taker McGowan us good for seconded half when Cektuc are trying to break down stubborn defences deft touch great with one twos tes they deserve to be in before engils but in a couple of months engils will come good we gave three best midfielders by far in Premier league and thats normy counting hiata abd McGregor and the Scottish media make it sound bad any five would be the first pick in any spl team so Celtic are smiling And Rogers will improve them he improved matt scoring to make him A£25,000,000 PLAYER
