A GAA fan in Ireland has reportedly been arrested for waving a Palestine flag at a Meath vs Tyrone match.

Footage put up on Twitter has garnered a lot of attention and put the debate of political statements in sport in firm focus.

Celtic fans continually wave Palestine flags at Celtic games even after numerous warnings and fines by UEFA in recent times – showing solidarity with the people of Palestine and their horrendous plight.

Celtic fans took it one step further when UEFA issued the club an £8K fine for waving the flag during a game against Israeli opponents and made up a JustGiving page to ‘Match the fine for Palestine’ – it did more than match it and raised over £175k. Showing exactly why sport can be a force for good.

The GAA have had their troubles and problems with political statements and reportedly refused one of their referees the right to wear a rainbow coloured wristband during the Gay marriage referendum campaign in Ireland a few years back.

The latest events are surely going to receive a lot of pushback from many GAA supporters.

  1. Total disgrace by the Garda. Can I assume that the Garda officers involved in the arrest would still class themselves as “West Brits” rather than Irish! Officers should be identified and shamed!
The GAA also need to respond to this and publicly announce if they agree with the arrest or not.
Hopefully the arresting Garda officers do not have access to an armoured car, as they might want to crash through the gates at the next match and shoot indiscriminately into the crowd.

  2. UEFA have a cheek , when they show their video on TV, you know the one i mean, where great players ask to stamp out racism from sport. That it self is a political statement? Flying the Palestine Flag Highlights that racism, as the Israel impose appertaid, as genocide, are all forms of oppression. Keep flying the flag Celtic, for all who are discriminated on.

  3. The only flags at football games should be football ones, especially when most of the people flying them are, at best ill-informed, at worst deliberately trying to antagonize people. People are getting treated badly in many other parts of the world, so why focus on a tiny Jewish country surrounded by huge, heavily populated muslim countries? What about flying flags supporting all the kids who have been abused by Irish catholic priests? Your hypocrisy is embarrassing.

    • Mark M,So im guessing you are ignorant to the fact,That in all walks of life,Child Abuse is happening and You mention Catholic Priests. You should look up Kincora Boys Home and the Abuse those poor kids endured at the hands of Protestants,Embarrassing Indeed. Then Neely and Dunn etc at £broke. Why do Sevconians Obsess over Child Abuse as a way of attempting to hide the Fact that Sevco are an utter embarrassment to Football and Life in General……Sad really that people of Your ilk,Deem it necessary to use such Vileness.Disgusting doesnt even come close,Fud.HfH GIRUY…Anyone who uses child abuse in relation to football is a Deranged Arsewipe!!!!!!

  4. Gay Palestinians stay away from Eire now!!!! is this what the Irish nation are telling the world. Hang your hats and batons up Gards. Your laughing stocks. SBRTT.
