The first minister, Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that there has been ‘no discussion’ between the government and the Scottish Football authorities, around cancelling the up and coming game between Celtic and Rangers, a week on Saturday.

As reported by the Daily Record, Sturgeon has said she wants the game to go ahead despite the current restrictions that have been brought into place over the last few weeks.

“It wouldn’t be my decision whether the Old Firm was cancelled or not. I certainly have had no discussions about cancelling the Old Firm.

“I would really like football, on the restricted basis that it is having to operate just now with no fans…to go ahead, because it is good that folk who can’t be in the pub and can’t be having house parties, they can at least watch their football team on the telly.

“So I want these things to go ahead, and there’s certainly no plans, as far as I’m aware, to cancel the Old Firm match.”

Many had feared that with the new restrictions that have been put in which stop certain pubs from opening, that the game was a threat of being cancelled, due to people than meeting up in massive groups at houses to watch the game.

However, it is good to hear that isn’t the case, for now. The First Minister certainly didn’t close off the idea completely but with it taking place in just over a week, it is looking increasingly likely.

At this stage of the season, it is a huge game between the sides, who are both hoping to come out on top of the league at the end of the play.
