Celtic have announced the appointment of Gavin Strachan as the new First Team Coach with immediate effect days after we reported the move was close to happening.

Strachan will come into replace Damien Duff, after the Irishman left his role at the club to work his the Republic of Ireland National team and also due to family commitments.

On joining the club, Gavin spoke to the club website saying:

“It is a huge honour to be appointed to this position with Celtic, such a giant of a club and a real iconic footballing institution. This really is an opportunity I could simply not turn down.

I am hugely excited about getting started with Neil, John and the players as we get ready for the challenges ahead”

Of course, Gavin isn’t the first Strachan to have worked for the club. With his Dad Gordan Strachan being the manager of the club from 2005-2009.

The new first team coach, has experience of playing his football in Scotland turning out for both Motherwell and Dundee on loan. Whilst also having spells at clubs such as Coventry City and Peterborough United.

He has had the majority of his coaching experience in English League 1, working with as assistant manager at both Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United, where he has had two spells at as a coach alongside Darren Ferguson, famously the son of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Neil Lennon also spoke on his delight of adding Strachan to his backroom team.

“We are delighted to bring Gavin to Celtic, he is a brilliant appointment for us and someone I know will work really well with myself, John Kennedy, the players and the rest of our backroom team.

We had a number of options for the role but Gavin was the outstanding candidate. He is a really talented, experienced, hard working and respected coach and I know he has to right qualities to make a great contribution to the club”

Over the last few years, Celtic have had a number of good coaches on board. Hopefully Gavi Strachan can be another one that we add to that list of names.
