CELTIC and Giorgos Giakoumakis had held talks about an improved contract; however, they broke down after the pay package wasn’t satisfactory for the player.

It was widely reported that Giakouamkis could be on the move in January, with both parties unlikely to return to the table, but Sky Sports dispute this claim.

Sky Sports claims that talks over a new contract have only stalled, not broken down. The news company also reports that the player is happy at Celtic, and both camps are still hoping to reach an agreement.

This report paints a different picture for Celtic fans, who braced themselves for the fan favourite to depart in the winter window.

Celtic are in a strong place regardless of what outcome is reached. If the player and club don’t reach an agreement, Celtic can hold out for a decent fee, with Giakoumakis under contract until 2026.

The striker was pivotal in last season’s league title win, finishing joint top scorer, despite scoring just one goal before Christmas.
