On Monday, Celtic will learn who they will face next in the last 32 of the Europa League. Everyone has an opinion on who Celtic should hope to draw next or who they should hope to avoid.
We put the question out on our social media pages yesterday and got back a mixed reaction but a good majority of Celtic fans want English opposition. Chris Sutton thinks the Scottish teams have nothing to fear.
The ex-Celtic striker was part of the team that knocked out his old club Blackburn and Liverpool on the way to Seville back in 2001.
Celtic can only draw Wolves in the next round while the Rangers could face Manchester United or Arsenal. Writing in his Record Sport column the Englishman thinks both sides in Glasgow should be relishing English opposition.
“I’m hoping Celtic face Wolves and Rangers land either Manchester United or Arsenal.”
“Neil Lennon and Steven Gerrard will look at their potential opponents and have a private preference. But I honestly don’t believe a trip to face one of the English clubs is something they should fear.”
“Scottish football’s on the up, getting two clubs into the knock-out stages is something to really shout about. This is a big deal. And I don’t think that any of the remaining clubs down south will especially fancy a trip north.”
Celtic made it to the last 32 last season when they faced Valencia but went out on a 3-0 aggregate scoreline. The home leg didn’t go to plan but the Bhoys put on a performance in Spain and were unlucky to walk away with a narrow 1-0 defeat.
