GRAHAM POTTER has vowed to help rehabilitate Shane Duffy.

The Brighton manager wants to build up the Irishman’s confidence after a disastrous spell at Celtic.

Shane left the club early to return to Brighton after an injury ruled him out of Celtic’s final two games. The defender wasn’t getting any game time and had sat on the bench mostly since February.

Quoted by the Glasgow Times, Potter has welcomed Shane back with open arms.

“He has had a tough time.

“Sometimes in football things don’t go as you want them to go.

Shane has had some tough challenges off the pitch.

“Losing his father just before he went to Celtic was a huge challenge for him, as you can imagine. He has had to deal with a lot.

“He, more than anybody, would have liked it to have worked out better than it did at Celtic but that’s football.

“From our perspective, he is always welcome here.

“He has been a fantastic servant to this club, well liked in the dressing room, well-respected.

“It is important now for us to help him, to get him back on his feet, so to speak, and to put him in an environment where he feels secure and enjoying his football.

“That’s what we will try to do for the next couple of weeks.”

Shane lost his Father in May and shortly after moved to Celtic. In the midst of a pandemic and trying to deal with the loss of a loved one has had a profound impact on the defender’s year.

It’s a shame things didn’t work out but for Shane, it’s all about getting his head down and going again next season whether that’s at Brighton or elsewhere.

For Celtic, they need to appoint a new manager and build a new team in the coming months to make sure they can bounce back.
