Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke was involved for Sweden in a crucial Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday evening away at Belgium. The match was abandoned, however, due to some horrifying events.

Indeed in Brussels, a gunman shot dead two Swedish football fans and wounded a third. News of this filtered through to the players and at half-time and with the score at 1-1, they decided they wouldn’t come back out for the second 45.

Lagerbielke was on the bench for this one after scoring his maiden international goal last week. He would’ve been involved in making the decision that few would argue with.

Further communication will be made by UEFA about what will happen with the game but right now, everyone’s thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. It was a shocking turn of events.

This frightening and upsetting news marked the end of the international break for the Swedes, and Lagerbielke will now likely return to Glasgow.
