The rise of Celtic centre-back Liam Scales has been something to behold in recent weeks. The Irishman has gone from strength to strength, and he made his first appearance for his nation on Friday evening.

Ireland hosted Greece at the Aviva Stadium in a European Championship qualifier and although they lost by two goals to nil, one of the visitors’ goals being a towering Giorgos Giakoumakis header, their manager Stephen Kenny came out with praise for Scales.

Kenny handed the 25-year-old his first cap, one that he worked hard for. He said (Ireland Football): “Nobody has given Liam anything. He’s had to earn it. He deserves to play.”

Scales’ Celtic form has undoubtedly caught the eye of the Irish gaffer who has been known for giving many players opportunities with the national team. Scales looks to have been the latest, and he will be hoping for a future with his country now going forward.
