Since joining in the summer transfer window, it has been a bit of a difficult start to life at his boyhood club for midfielder James McCarthy.

Joining on a free from Crystal Palace, the 30-year old had a spell in the side during Callum McGregor’s injury issues but has also had his disruptions due to injury and a difficult pre-season.

However, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou looks set to reintroduce McCarthy back into action.

Last week, the former Socceroos boss lost Tom Rogic due to injury. So it now appears he sees a chance for the Ireland internationalist to return to the side and is hopeful he can make an impact.

“James McCarthy has had injuries, and his pre-season was difficult, but he’s back fit now, and he’s available,” he said as quoted by the Daily Record.

“He’ll get an opportunity in the coming weeks, and hopefully, he takes it. We brought James in because we wanted a strong squad.

“In the midfield area, we don’t have a lot of depth. He’s an important part of that, so it will be good to get him involved again.

“Hopefully, he gets back to the levels we know he can get to, and I’m sure he’ll contribute.”

The midfielder has struggled thus far to get up to speed with Ange Postecoglou’s side, which has been evident at times during some of his performances.

He hasn’t featured since the 4-0 loss to Leverkusen at the end of September, but McCarthy did make a return to the bench after his recent absence on Saturday afternoon.

Now looks like a good opportunity for him to kickstart his Celtic career, and that is all something we would like to see – given the issues we currently face in midfield this season.

Whether or not McCarthy can be the one to provide the cover in that position during this tricky part of the season will likely be answered in the next few weeks.
