It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has been spotted sporting a vintage Celtic shirt during a half-hour deep-dive into classic football kits—adding a bit of Glasgow green to his growing collection.
The Hollywood actor appeared on an episode of Classic Shirts, trying on a range of retro football tops. Midway through the show, McElhenney emerged in a throwback Celtic strip and immediately sparked a conversation on the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers. In classic American curiosity, he asked the host which club was Catholic and which was Protestant—then let out a chuckle of relief when he learned he was wearing the shirt of the “Catholic one.”
McElhenney, alongside Ryan Reynolds, has been at the forefront of Wrexham’s incredible rise—guiding the Welsh side to three consecutive promotions. But it’s clear he’s now putting just as much effort into his football drip as he is the club’s revival.

The choice of Celtic isn’t without its weight. Formed in 1887 by Irish Catholic immigrants in Glasgow’s East End, Celtic Football Club was created to help alleviate poverty in the local immigrant population. Brother Walfrid, a Marist Brother, spearheaded the project as a way to feed and support the city’s Irish Catholic poor through the proceeds of football matches.
Though Celtic today is proudly inclusive and supported by fans of all backgrounds, the club’s Irish and Catholic roots remain a core part of its identity—especially in contrast to its historical rivals across the city.
McElhenney’s innocent dive into football culture has been a bit of fun, that Celtic supporters will appreciate. If you’re an always sunny fan and a Celtic fan, then it’s a brilliant crossover!
