Former Celtic player Joe Miller has had his say on the David Turnbull saga after the player’s agent rejected a contract offer from the club on Friday.

Celtic expected to be able to unveil the Motherwell player as Neil Lennon’s first Celtic signing on Friday but by 5pm the club had to issue a statement which made it clear they had offered David a deal they would not be budging from and that deal had been rejected.

This has left the player in limbo and surprised many people who thought the move to Celtic would be straight forward after a fee had been agreed.

Speaking about the transfer saga, Miller believes his agent might have got carried away.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw he knocked back Celtic. His agent might have got a bit carried away with himself. He’s a good player but the boy still needs to develop.” Miller told RecordSport.

“The figures being talked about are huge but that’s the way the game is these days. If he continues to develop then
the money
will come to him. Celtic wouldn’t sit still, there would be more contracts down the line or even a big move to the Premier League.

“If he goes down south just now to maybe the Championship, there’s a chance he could get swallowed up. There are not many 19-year-olds who go straight into the EPL.

“At Celtic he would be part of a squad with a winning mentality and experienced players around him who would help him reach his potential.”

Neil Lennon has been very keen on bringing Turnbull in but the club’s stance is very clear and it would take a come down from his agent or intervention from the player himself to see a deal go through now.

Celtic have a number of targets they are looking to bring in and as the statement said on social media on Friday, if they don’t want to sign the deal then Celtic will move on.

If his agent can get him the money he wants elsewhere then the very best of luck to him.
