It seems like pie in the sky and one former Celt actually wrote Peter Lawwell would only get Rafa Benitez up to Scotland if he used chloroform but all signs point to a Newcastle exit this summer.

Asked about his contract and if there was any more movement with the Newcastle board, the Spaniard was blunt.

Since Brendan Rodgers left his position at Celtic and Neil Lennon came in on an interim basis there has been a lot of speculation about who will take the Celtic job full time come the summer.

Benitez has been there or thereabouts in the bookmakers betting odds but even with his contract coming to an end there will be plenty of suitors for the former Liverpool manager.

Newcastle fans are hopeful the manager will work things out with the club but as the clock ticks down it appears he could be off.

Celtic don’t have the finances to appease some of the top managers who might have fancied a new challenge. Having to dig around in a bargain basement bucket when you’re used to spending big money is not ideal. It would be a massive coup to get Benitez.
