Former Celtic striker and current Sky Sports pundit Chris Sutton has voiced his confusion over some Celtic fans’ opinions regarding Belgian midfielder Arne Engels.

The 21-year-old, who joined from Bundesliga side Augsburg in the summer, became a significant signing for Celtic, breaking their transfer record with an £11 million fee. However, Sutton believes much of the criticism surrounding Engels is more about his price tag than his performances on the pitch. Speaking live on Sky Sports, Sutton said: “I never understood the questioning of Engels. I think it’s all to do with the price tag, more than anything.” (Sky Sports, 11/01/2025)

Sutton also drew comparisons to Nicolas Kühn, who arrived during last year’s January window and initially took time to adjust to the demands of the Scottish game. The German winger has since become one of Celtic’s most influential attacking players.

Celtic’s Record-Breaking Signings

Engels’ arrival saw him surpass Adam Idah and former French talisman Odsonne Édouard as Celtic’s most expensive signing. Édouard, a fan favourite during his time at the club, made 179 appearances and netted 87 goals in all competitions before departing for Crystal Palace.

Impressive Early Stats for Engels

Despite the debate surrounding his performances, Engels’ stats indicate he is already making a strong contribution. In 19 league appearances, he has scored five goals—four of which have come from the penalty spot—and provided two assists. His overall tally across all competitions stands at 28 appearances, six goals, and nine assists.

At just past the halfway point of the season, the Belgian’s contributions suggest he could become even more pivotal as the campaign progresses. With time and further adaptation, he will justify the hefty investment and secure his place as a key figure in Brendan Rodgers’ side.
