Reports late last night have suggested that Celtic are closing in on a deal to sign Yokohama F Marinos striker Daizen Maeda.

The 24-year old frontman finished the season as joint-top goalscorer in Japan and now looks set to join up with his former boss, Ange Postecoglou, in Glasgow.

For some, this move doesn’t come as much of a surprise, with media and journalists in Japan expecting Ange to make a move for one of his better players at his former club in the J-League.

It also appears to have been a move that Maeda himself was keen on, with a recent interview revealing his ambition of moving to Europe and playing on that stage which Celtic will provide.

As quoted by the Daily Record reflecting on his previous short period in Europe with Portuguese side Maritimo in 2017, Maeda said.

“I felt that I still have a long way to after playing against foreign players.

“If I don’t experience playing in a foreign league, I won’t be able to close the gap.

“So, if I have a chance, I would love to go to such a stage.”

With the footage coming out of Maeda as a player, it is very exciting to see the rapid striker closing in on a move to Parkhead.

We have already seen the success of Kyogo Furuhashi coming from the same league, and it feels like the 24-year old will be able to have a similar sort of impact, given his previous history of playing under Ange and his style of play.
