ALLY MCCOIST believes The Rangers will want to win the Scottish Cup to stop a Celtic treble.
However, the former Ibrox boss made the outlandish claim that they don’t HAVE to win it.
It comes as both Celtic and Rangers are heavy favourites to lift the trophy. Both Glasgow clubs are through to the semi-final and as we await Monday evening’s draw it will either be Inverness, Ayr/Falkirk to join them.
To say the Ibrox club don’t have to win it is an incredible statement. They started out the season chasing the treble, then it became about the cups, after Celtic’s win in the League Cup final it’s became about the Scottish cup and now we’re hearing that doesn’t matter either.
Speaking to Viaplay, as cited by SunSport McCoist said: “I don’t think they have to win it. They will clearly want to win it as it’s massive for them.
“They will want to prevent Celtic from winning the treble, it looks like they will win the league although there is still a lot of football to be played. Continued improvement, that’s where I am at on it.
“There has been improvement clearly since Michael came in. Results have been good, the level of performances have been better, even though it wasn’t brilliant here.
“In an ideal situation they would want to win the cup but do they have to win the cup? I would have to say no.”
Celtic look after themselves and will want to win everything in front of them. It’s safe to say there will be no Celtic fans saying we don’t need to win the Scottish cup. The mentality at Celtic is simple, look to win every game and see where we can take things.
The surrender mentality by McCoist is interesting. It either doesn’t matter or it’s all about stopping Celtic. The lack of identity beyond that from the Ibrox club will see them continue to miss the mark more often than not.
There are no guarantees in football and Celtic won’t be taking anything for granted. We’ve had a great season so far and it’s coming to an exciting conclusion.
