Adam Idah’s goal in Ireland’s 2-1 win over Bulgaria last night was not just a crucial strike for his country; it also served as a timely response to the criticism he has faced this season.

After being left on the bench for Ireland’s previous game, Idah showed why he’s at Celtic, where he has already netted 14 goals this season.

Frustration and the Need for Clarity

In his post-match comments, Idah opened up about the frustration he felt after being an unused substitute in Ireland’s earlier match against Bulgaria. The striker revealed that he had a conversation with Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson, seeking clarity on his role within the squad. Idah said: (Scottish Sun), “It was nothing bad, it was just me asking what I needed to do and he told me. Thankfully, he gave me some minutes on this occasion and I was able to show myself.”

Idah’s desire to prove himself is clear, and he did just that with his crucial winner, a moment that no doubt shut down some of the online criticism he has seen.

Shutting Down the Critics

Idah didn’t hold back when discussing the online criticism he’d faced, which seemed to fuel his determination. After scoring the decisive goal, his celebration was a pointed response to those doubting him. “I saw a lot of stuff online, so [the celebration] was just telling people to shut up, really,” he said, clearly frustrated by the negative comments.

The goal was not just important for his country but also a personal moment. Idah, who joined Celtic in the summer, expressed that he felt he had been unfairly doubted.

A Conversation with Hallgrímsson

Idah was keen to stress that, while he didn’t agree with his omission in the previous game, he understood that Hallgrímsson had his reasons. After the victory, the two shared a laugh and were able to clear the air.

“We are men at the end of the day and we had a laugh and a joke after the game. I think that’s all I needed to do, to go on the pitch and show what I could do and, thankfully, I did that,” Idah added.

He also expressed hope that his performance would leave Hallgrímsson with no doubt about what he brings to the team. “Hopefully, he can see what I’m about now.”

Looking Ahead

Idah will be hoping to carry on this form against Hearts at Celtic Park on Saturday in the Scottish Premiership, as the Hoops look to bounce back from their defeat against Rangers last time out. With his confidence high after his match-winning display for Ireland, the forward will be eager to make an impact for Celtic and help them get back to winning ways in what promises to be an important game.
