MOTHERWELL youngster James Scott has opened up about his part in THAT goal which turned Celtic Park into a cauldron of raw emotion back in February.

The Celtic players and fans were incensed when instead of passing it back to Celtic after Ryan Christie had to receive treatment, James chose to run up the pitch and managed to put the ball into the path of Gboly Ariyibi who finished from close range.

Celtic were 2-0 up and cruising at the time but the goal got the Steelmen back into it and fans were left raging at Motherwell’s lack of sportsmanship.

For the rest of the game, every dropped ball was contested by Celtic players with fans making it known to give Motherwell nothing after their shocking tactic.

The roof came off the place on the 88th minute when Odsonne Edouard made it 3-1 on the day to put the game beyond doubt. Celtic added a fourth from Oli burke in added time.

There was massive debate after the game with ‘Well boss Stephen Robinson admitting it wasn’t the right thing to do BUT didn’t tell his team to let Celtic through to get that goal back – something we saw recently during Villa vs Leeds.

James Scott, 18, cringes when he thinks about the goal now and how he became a villain in his first Motherwell start.

“If I could go back and change it then obviously I would. It was my first start, it was Parkhead.” Scott told the BBC.

“You couldn’t get a better start than that. All the excitement is running through your head and then it happened.

“I didn’t really know but it’s just a minor fault in my career. You can’t do anything about it.

“It’s in the past and I hate talking about it.

“All I’m going to say is I had to put my phone down for a few days,” he said. “It was non-stop pinging, I couldn’t even look at it. It was ridiculous.”

  1. Being wise after the event is not good enough. It was plainly unsportsmanlike and it happened, but never should have. The boy knew what he was doing, but was only sorry when he saw the reaction. For his sake, I hope he can cope with moving on, but he will always be known for this and you can’t change that. Motherwell will not be trusted again and we made a mistake trusting them here. Memories can be lengthy and karma can be a bitch.
