It was widely reported yesterday that Bundesliga club, Herta Berlin were close to agreeing to a deal with Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata.

Since then Neil Lennon has not only declared “I’m not aware of that”, he also went onto say that the club is doing everything to keep Boyata at Celtic Park. Whoever the new manager for next season will need every little bit of help they can get regarding ingoing and outgoing transfers. (continues below…)

The back four at this moment in time is at an emergency level. As it stands, Boyata, Lustig, Benkovic and Toljan are all set for Celtic Park summer exits. That alone is a monumental gap to fill. If Lennon could get Boyata to sign before this season ends it could encourage one or two more outgoing players to stay on too.

Lennon has enough on his plate without the distraction of transfers but it is something that cannot be ignored. After yesterday’s bore draw at home to Livi, the manager needs to put some spark into the team before some massive clashes arrive, clashes that have trophies up for grabs. Sometimes a contract extension can create a buzz among players and fans, the chances of Boyata signing on for any length of time looked hopeless a few months back.
