It has already been noted that Celtic has a vast amount of players who used to play for the club still in the Scottish system.

Niall McGinn, Darren O’Dea, Massimo Donati, Scott McDonald, Stephen McManus and even Kenny Miller to name just a few – but we could be set for some more former bhoys joining these ranks next season if rumours are to be believed.

Shaun Maloney to Aberdeen is a rumour that surfaced yesterday evening with Derek McInnes wanting to add experience and depth to his midfield. The current Hull City player is coming to the end of his contract down south and Aberdeen are confident of a deal to bring him back north. The midfielder had two spells at Celtic, coming through the youth system was always a fan favourite and scored some memorable goals. Could Shaun be coming up against his former club next season?

Charlie Mulgrew only left Celtic last summer after failing to come to terms on a new deal with the club. Terms were offered but Charlie rejected this before moving to Blackburn under then boss Owen Coyle. Injury and upheaval has seen the player not reach his potential at Ewood park and last weekend suffered the humiliation of relegation. The utility man has a contract until 2019 but it’s rumoured that former Celtic boss Neil Lennon is trying to entice Mulgrew to join him at Hibs.

Two more players who are on Hibs radar are out of contract with Celtic this summer and have both been on-loan to the Easter road club this season already. Efe Ambrose and Kris Commons – some may laugh at Neil Lennon’s range of scouting but these players still have a lot to give. While it looks like the Irishman is trying to get the old band back together it remains to be seen if Hibernian can afford the outlay involved to get them.

  1. I hope Charlie would still be playing for Celtic, that’s not the case, would love to see him back in Scotland, vs Blackburn.
