Ireland boss Stephen Kenny says he will have a chat with his captain Shane Duffy this week to see where he’s at after a very trying spell at Celtic.

The defender has had a very poor start at his boyhood club and is struggling for form.

Shane only made the bench on Sunday and came on for the last 15 minutes when Ajer’s injury came back.

The defender has yet to prove his worth to the Scottish champions and Neil Lennon doesn’t have the time or space to persevere, that’s why he was benched at Motherwell.

Can he turn it around? Of course, he can but it’s an uphill battle at the minute.

Kenny has kept an eye on his defender during the last few weeks and he will have a chat with Shane in the coming days.

“I have a list that my fitness coach and analyst compiled in relation to the amount of minutes and games our players have played. Shane Duffy has played, from starting the first game for me in Bulgaria (in September), 18 games in that period (prior to the Motherwell match).” Kenny told RTE.

“He didn’t play (from the start) today, he came on at the end (in the 78th minute). That’s fine. Maybe he needed a rest. We’ll have a look – I’ll see how he comes in, I’ll chat to him and see how he is.”

Celtic will have a hectic schedule after the international break and Duffy needs to get his head in the game and hope he can contribute to Celtic’s rise to the top of the table.
