Brendan Rodgers is quite rightly upset at Motherwell’s antics today and their poor showing of sportsmanship at Celtic Park. Despite a 4-1 win at home for the champions, the game left a bad taste in the mouth as Motherwell stole a goal they didn’t deserve.
Scott Bain had kept over 1200 minutes worth of clean sheets domestically. Credit has to go to the defenders in front of him too for such a record. That record was taking away from all involved today by some sneaky cheating. There is no other word for it. This wasn’t lost on the Celtic manager despite keeping his eight-point lead at the top of the SPFL.
In his post-match interview with Celtic TV, Rodgers made his feelings clear.
“I’m disappointed for my players, we’ve kept clean sheets this year and that’s a goal that goes against our work and the ethics of the game. That’s what’s disappointing. Motherwell had the chance to do something about it but decided not to.”
A 4-1 scoreline suggests that Celtic were comfortable winners but after the Motherwell goal, Celtic came off the rails and allowed Motherwell into the game. A magic strike from Edouard on eighty minutes sealed the win before Oli Burke scored the fourth to put the boot into the unsporting visitors.
