Ayr United star Jamie Murphy couldn’t help but laugh after his manager Scott Brown was sensationally sent off during a charity match in the Netherlands over the weekend.
Brown was turning out for a Celtic Legends side against Feyenoord Legends at De Kuip in the Wim Jansen Cup, a match played in honour of the late former Celtic and Feyenoord manager, Wim Jansen, the man who famously stopped Rangers from winning 10-in-a-row in 1998.
Despite the light-hearted nature of the event, Brown’s competitive edge got the better of him once again. In the 86th minute, he slid in with a crunching tackle on Thomas Buffel, a former Rangers player, no less, and was promptly shown a red card by the match referee.
Murphy, speaking after Ayr United’s league clash, said: “I did have a chuckle at that yesterday. It did get put in the group chat as well. He obviously knows his stuff and knows what he’s doing and that he’s got a bit of anger and obviously he’s had that as a player all the way through and as a manager as well. But he still takes things seriously, even when he’s playing head tennis or involved in games. He still wants to win.” [Open Goal]
The tackle which looked clean to many saw Buffel go down, the referee point to the spot, and Brown go ballistic. He engaged in a furious shouting match with the official, sarcastically gave him a thumbs up, and then stormed off after the red card was brandished.
To make things even better (or worse, depending on your perspective), the referee’s bodycam caught every second of the dramatic moment and footage is now making the rounds on social media.
Even in retirement and at a charity match Scott Brown is box office.
