Chris Sutton has called on the Celtic board to front up and apologise to supporters after a disastrous few weeks on and off the pitch left trust at breaking point.
The former Hoops striker believes communication from the club has been badly lacking, pointing to the unsigned 1,000-word statement released after the transfer window as an example of how not to address supporter concerns.
“I think it would be helpful, you know, I think that the statement was just absolutely mad,” Sutton told Sky Sports. “I think sorry is a start, but just going back to Brendan Rodgers and, you know, the stuff before the season, you know, which he said about needing players in, and this is where everything stems from, he was right.
“He was right and that’s why the supporters are angry, that’s why Callum McGregor came out and said we need bodies in. So, you know, we could talk about friction between the board and whoever, but the bottom line is there are millions and millions and millions of pounds that Celtic have in the bank and the squad quality was diminishing. So people just can’t quite understand that. And I really understand that.
“And look, there’ll be people on the Celtic board who understand that. They didn’t do enough, so that’s where, you know, you come out and say, well, you know, we didn’t get it right, we’re sorry, you know, you have to move on. That would be a small step.”
Celtic fans staged a delayed entry protest at Rugby Park on Sunday, leaving the Chadwick Stand half-empty for the first 12 minutes of the match. With the anger showing no sign of easing, Sutton believes even a simple apology could help ease tensions and reconnect the club with its support.
It would be a start, and a small step, as Chris puts it. Celtic fans are demanding more, though. The Celtic board were at the game yesterday to witness the protest and heard the chants. They will be feeling uncomfortable about this whole situation.
Celtic did get a bit of luck in the match to walk away with three points. Not with the penalty, there can be no arguments about it, despite some people trying their best.
Performances haven’t been there this season, but adding freshness to the team, which Brendan Rodgers consistently called for, would have helped.
