CHRIS SUTTON has used his RecordSport column to deliver the brutal truth to Celtic on the transfer front. The Englishman has no problem with Kieran Tierney leaving and doesn’t blame the club for taking that sort of money for the defender but the former Celtic striker believes the squad is nowhere near where it needs to be with the season already kicked off and Champions League football hanging in the balance.

Celtic have recruited four players this window – some could argue only three first team players with Luca Connell likely to play for the developmental side.

While these have been welcomed additions, Sutton knows there will have to be much more in the door by the start of September or Celtic could be in trouble.

“Christopher Jullien, Boli Bolingoli and Hatem Abd Elhamed have come in, along with prospect Luca Connell.

“But it’s not enough. Celtic are still short of the quality needed if they are to make a decent fist of the Champions League.

“Are they strong enough right now? Absolutely not.

“This Cluj tie is still very much alive as the Romanians will be a threat and it will only get harder if Celtic get through this stage.

“You look at the team the other night and Celtic ended up with Ryan Christie wide right, Marian Shved was on the bench and Scott Sinclair was at home.

“There was only Tom Rogic and Mikey Johnson injured so it wasn’t far off a full-strength side. Is that team going to be good enough? No chance.”

Neil Lennon and Celtic are still actively trying to bring players and you can sense some frustration at this point trying to secure targets. It’s the same for the fans – after seeing so many leave this summer, there has to be more quality brought in before the end of the window or Celtic will struggle.
