Celtic have been linked with a move for Ross Barkley over recent weeks from journalists down south while reliable journalist Mark Hendry has claimed the club is not in for the Chelsea man.

It’s peak transfer nonsense as we move towards the end of the window.

While the legitimacy of the reports is questionable, it hasn’t stopped people and pundits debating whether it would be a good move for Celtic and Barkley.

The Englishman’s career has stalled at Chelsea, he’s been left out of the Stamford Bridge side’s EPL squad and is looking for first team football this season.

Celtic is an intriguing prospect for many footballers with Champions League football right around the corner, but the finances involved in any deal, even a loan move would be astronomical.

Bringing a player in with a decent profile also doesn’t guarantee you get value for money. We saw that last season when Aaron Ramsay failed to give our rivals a boost to win the league and he missed the curcuma’s penalty in the Europa League final.

Despite that, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie has told Football Insider, the move would be great for both parties and distanced Barkley to Celtic would be anything like Ramsay to Rangers:

“I think big clubs like Celtic need big players and Ross Barkley is a big player.” He said.

“He’s a quality player and I think it would be great for Celtic, great for Scottish football if a player like that comes up. It’s not like Aaron Ramsey who came from Juventus and was injured a lot, Barkley is fit.

“I think he enjoys his football. I’m a great believer, if you’re not getting a game, you’ve got to go and play football.

“Why wouldn’t he come to Celtic? They’re in the Champions League, they’ve started magnificently in the league. It would be great to get him on board.

“I think he can play anywhere. He’s an attacking midfielder, he can sit as well.

Is Ross What Celtic Need?

It wouldn’t be the worst signing, and if he was fit and ready to go, his ability isn’t in doubt. The circus around such a signing would be the problem. One bad game and the weight coming down on the midfielder would be huge.

Celtic could be doing with an out and out holding midfielder before the window closes. Ross isn’t that guy.

  1. I’ve always thought Barkley was overrated, he was a prospect at Everton but he’s never fulfilled his potential and got swallowed up in the Chelsea machinations. It would be a definite NO from me as we’ve got a good settled dressing room and his wages and the attention he would bring wouldn’t be good for the group. As much as I liked McAvennie as a player he’s not the the brightest pundit and talks utter rubbish at times.
