Former Celtic midfielder and assistant manager John Collins has revealed his doubts over Callum McGregor being the next captain of the club going into next season.

As quoted by Glasgow Live, Collins states that no matter who the next manager is, McGregor will be the last player they will want to leave with the quality he possesses. However, Collins did reveal his doubts over the 27-year old as a candidate to replace Scott Brown as the next club captain.

“I would imagine the last player the new manager would want to leave the club would be Callum McGregor, that’s for sure.

“I know Callum very well. He is a Celtic supporter and has been a consistent performer year after year.

“I think he’s one the new manager will be desperate to keep hold of. He’s got a long contract so there’s no need to sell him due to a contract rolling down.

“I’ve got to be honest. Callum is a quiet, reserved young man.

“His leadership is in performance. He performs like a leader consistently but he is not a huge talker or shouter or motivator.

“He can be a captain, but I wouldn’t class Callum as a natural leader or spokesperson. I’d class him as a top-class football player and a good role model for every player in the academy.”

With Brown leaving in the summer, for the last few months it has felt like McGregor could be the natural successor and seemed to be geared towards that, wearing the armband on several occasions this season.

In the last few weeks though, some fans have begun to reveal their doubts over McGregor taking the armband permanently when the veteran midfielder departs, especially after last weekend’s sending off against Rangers.

Ultimately, the decision will come down to the next manager when he joins the club. It might be the case that they want to bring in their own captain and someone they trust to do that role.
