CELTIC have already seemingly ruled out a move for the now out of contract Phil Jagielka but according to his former team-mate James McFadden, the player would be a ‘tremendous influence’ on the Celtic side.
Jagielka broke the news on social media this week that Everton would not be renewing his current deal and the player was free to find a new club.
At 36, the defender will have limited options but he will still believe he can offer something at a top level.
McFadden is adamant Celtic would be lucky to land the player, even at this age and that he’d command respect from the rest of the Celtic dressing room.
“People will look at Phil’s age, but I wouldn’t worry too much about that.” McFadden told SunSport.
“Look at Davie Weir. He was 36 when he joined Rangers and look at the impact he had. Because of his ability and the way he carried himself he commanded the instant respect of his team-mates.
“Phil would be exactly the same at Celtic. He would have a tremendous influence on the entire club.
“I looked up to David because of the way he led his life. Phil would set the same example for the Celtic lads, no doubt about it.”
Celtic will be in the market for at least one defender this summer with Boyata leaving on a free and Benkovic heading back to Leicester after his loan.
Celtic have Ajer and Jozo for the qualifiers but if one or both get injured Celtic are in major trouble.
