A lot of Celtic fans have given up hope of Mikey Johnston being able to put a sustained run together in order to be considered a first team starter.

The winger has seemed in the cusp of a breakthrough for three seasons only for injury to completely derail his progress.

Again, the midfielder has been in and out of the squad this season but did manage near enough 60 minutes against Raith Rovers on Sunday afternoon before walking off gingerly.

Mikey burst onto the Sven at an early age, his skill and trickery is right up the Celtic fans street.

However, with Jota in front of him in the pecking order and likely Maeda when Kyogo is back, it’s going to be difficult for the player to make proper head way.

Joe Hart has delivered a massive vote of confidence to Mikey this week by describing him as a top talent who has been very unlucky with injuries.

Speaking to Celtic TV, Joe said: “Mikey Johnston, he’s a cheeky boy but someone I really like and really want to do well.

“He’s an incredibly talented player. He’s been through a lot, a lot of difficult injuries that maybe people on the outside wouldn’t necessarily understand.

“It’s not their job to understand, but he’s getting his head down, he’s got a good personality, and he’s a top player.”

It’s still a tough ask for the winger to come good. Celtic fans would love to see Johnston succeed. Ultimately; it’ll be down to the Celtic manager to decide if Mikey can make the grade.

There’s a lot of games coming up, it’ll be interesting to see where the player slots in the squad.
