Former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart has reacted to his former Manchester City teammate Kasper Schmeichel signing a one-year contract extension with the Hoops.

Schmeichel, who joined Celtic in the summer on a free transfer from Anderlecht, has been a revelation, sensationally filling Hart’s boots. This is no small feat, considering the strong relationship the former England international had built with the Celtic support before his retirement.

Hart, who has a larger-than-life personality, has shown himself not only to be an incredible goalkeeper during his time in Glasgow but also an even better human being, with his kind words towards Celtic and his three years at the club, a testament to his class and connection with the Hoops Support.

For Schmeichel, the Dane is in the twilight of his career at 38 years old, however, has shown no signs of slowing down since his move to Celtic. With Brendan Rodgers’ current deal also expiring in the summer of 2026, the duo may look to sign further extensions within the next 12 months if they are even more successful over that period, domestically and in Europe.

It’s a relief for Hoops supporters, as quite simply, they won’t be able to sign a goalkeeper with Schmeichel’s experience and guaranteed quality in the current transfer market. In what was a real coup from Rodgers to convince the former Leicester City goalkeeper to move to Glasgow.

Hart said: (TNT Sports), “Fully deserved [Kasper Schmeichel’s contract extension], absolutely delighted for him and the club, I’m so happy for him. He’s been excellent this season.

“It’s not about me but I know that feeling. He was so excellent at Leicester and then in the wilderness for a bit, and then this club opens its arms to you as it has done, it’s perfect for Kasper.”

Hart knows exactly what life at Celtic means to a goalkeeper, and with Schmeichel being a close friend of the Englishman, you can’t help but feel that Hart played a big part in the Danish goalkeeper’s transfer to Celtic in the summer, alongside Rodgers.

Schmeichel, who hasn’t always had the domestic success he truly deserves, is beginning to find that at Celtic. With the chance to compete for the Premier Sports Cup, Scottish Cup, and Scottish Premiership this season, as well as push the Hoops further in Europe, and already having the Premier Sports Cup to his name, he is relishing the challenge and demands of being Celtic’s number one after Hart’s retirement.

  1. Good business. Now let’s find his long term successor and get him in studying under Kasper so we have a smooth transition when the great Dane walks off into the sunset with a couple of trebles to his name.
