Celtic got their Scottish Premiership opener off to a winning start, and one former midfielder watched on from the stands.
Joe Ledley was back at Celtic Park on Monday night as the former Hoops midfielder watched Martin O’Neill’s side begin the new Premiership campaign with a win over Dundee.
Benjamin Nygren proved the difference on the day, getting on the end of a pinpoint Kieran Tierney delivery to score the only goal of the game as the Hoops secured the three points to open the season.
Before kick-off, Callum McGregor unfurled the league flag as supporters celebrated last season’s title success, secured dramatically on the final day against Hearts. There was another familiar face inside the stadium too, with Ledley returning to Paradise alongside his family.
It was the first time the 39-year-old had brought his children to Celtic Park, something he shared with supporters after the match.
Ledley, who retired from football in 2021, posted on Instagram:
“First home game at Celtic Park for the kids, and what an amazing experience it was. A huge thank you to everyone at Celtic for making us feel so welcome and looking after us. Great to be back at paradise, Even keeping @sirrodstewart seat warm for you. Look forward to seeing you all again very soon. Hail Hail!”

The Welshman remains a popular figure among the Celtic support after arriving from Cardiff City in 2010 and quickly making himself a fixture in the middle of the park.
Across four years in Glasgow, Ledley made 157 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 24 assists. He lifted three Scottish Premiership titles and two Scottish Cups before moving on in 2014.
Nicknamed ‘The Midfield Dragon’, Ledley was also a key part of Neil Lennon’s side that reached the Champions League last 16 in 2013. His performance in the famous 2-1 win over Barcelona on November 7, 2012 remains one of the standout nights, with the midfielder playing every minute of a famous victory under the lights at Paradise.

Supporters have always held Ledley in high regard for what he gave the club, both domestically and in Europe. Seeing him back at Celtic Park, this time sharing the experience with his family, was a welcome sight for many in attendance.
Judging by his message afterwards, the visit meant just as much to him. Celtic clearly remains a special place for Ledley, and the reception he received showed the feeling is very much mutual.
