Celtic’s move for Joel Mvuka has run into a late problem, with Ouest-France reporting that the winger failed his medical after the two clubs had already agreed a deal. The transfer, believed to be worth around £3 million, has been put on hold while the situation is looked at.
Lorient and Celtic had agreed terms for the Norwegian winger, and Mvuka had already begun the move. He left Lorient on Saturday night after their 2–1 win over Nantes, said his goodbyes, and travelled to Scotland to finish the transfer. The belief was that everything would be signed off quickly.
That has not been the case. The report says an issue picked up during the medical stopped the deal from going through. No details have been shared, but it was enough to pause the move rather than push it over the line. With the Scottish window still open for a short spell, a decision now needs to be made fast.
Mvuka has found starts hard to come by in Ligue 1 this season, featuring mostly from the bench. At Celtic, he was expected to add speed and direct running out wide, especially in games where play slows against deep defences. That has been an area of need at times.
The next few hours will shape Celtic’s season. Either the issue is cleared and the deal is finished, or Mvuka heads back to France with his future still unclear.
A move that looked done is now back in doubt. With uncertainty still hanging over the Mvuka deal, the obvious next step would be to turn attention to Motherwell and test their resolve over Tawanda Maswanhise.
Reports today suggest an asking price of around £3 million, with Anderlecht already having an approach rejected. For Celtic, that offers a clear choice: act decisively on a player who is proven in the league and available now, rather than wait on a move elsewhere that may yet collapse.
That option would also cut out any settling-in period. Maswanhise already knows the pace of the league, the grounds, and what the Premiership demands.
