JOHN HARTSON has lifted the lid on some of the things he’s had to endure since retiring from the game when it comes to rival fans.

The former Celtic striker has had many real battles in his career so he can take everything else in his stride. Hartson spoke of heading to Ibrox on media duties and being subjected to vile abuse he would not say to his worst enemy.

Addressing Kris Boyd’s complaint about being targeted by Celtic fans, the Welshman has sympathy but made it clear this isn’t isolated and revealed his Ibrox hell.

“When it comes to verbal abuse – and I am not saying it is right – you are going to get it having played for one side of the divide. Hartson told the Evening Times.

“I should know. I have been back at Ibrox as a former Celtic player within my current media role and there are things said to you that you wouldn’t say to your worst enemy. I am not saying it is right. That is the gig in Scotland. Some of the absolute venom that comes out of the mouths of people would amaze you.”

Hartson once famously failed a medical at Ibrox before signing for Celtic under Martin O’Neill. The Welshman became a fan favourite and a thorn in the side of the old Ibrox club.

It’s not surprising the type of bile Hartson is talking about. We see it on social media most days; it’s repetitive and pathetic.
