JOHN MCGINN turned down Celtic and Brendan Rodgers last summer when Peter Lawwel’s unwillingness to do a deal with Hibernian came back to bite the Scottish champions.
The club only finally got a bid accepted for the midfielder when news filtered through he was heading down to Birmingham to sign with Aston Villa.
It was the catalyst for a lot of discontent between Peter Lawwell and the former manager before he jumped ship six months later. Celtic fans can’t be too mad about the outcome because the failed move proved to be the making of Ryan Christie whose Celtic career would have surely come to an end with the signing of McGinn.
For John, his move was vindicated with promotion and although Villa capitulated late on in their re-debut to the Premier League – the player got among the goals and scored against Spurs on his personal Premier league debut.
Speaking to TalkSport this morning as cited by the Evening Times, John was asked about that failed move to Celtic and he had nothing but great things to say about the club as a supporter.
“I’m still a massive Celtic supporter. I was watching the game at the weekend.
“I always will be. That will never leave you.”
When asked about a move to Celtic Park in the future, McGinn didn’t rule it out.
“I’ve got to focus on doing the best I can for Aston Villa and whatever comes up in the future we’ll take it from there.
“I’m still a Celtic supporter. The boys here know I harp on about it all the time but I’m really focused on Villa and doing well for them.”
