We’ve been around the block a few times now to know that reports suggesting one thing doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

However, the right noises in the right places can give you cause for optimism.

Todays reports about Jota and a potential permanent Celtic deal have gathered pace. We caution against getting too carried away but several outlets in Portugal appear convinced the winger wants to stay at Celtic beyond this season.

Portuguese outlet Abola goes one further and reports Celtic have triggered an option to buy in his loan deal to keep the player at the club.

If true, it’s a major signal of intent from the club and a willingness to get business done as early as possible before next season. Ange is a man with ambition and wants to have a good crack at the Champions League. To do that, we need to not only retain our star players this season, but add to it in the summer.

The £6.3m transfer seems like a no brainier and if Jota fancies it, wages shouldn’t be a stumbling block to keep the player here.

Champions League money would mean Celtic can afford the fee. Most people in the boardroom will accept Celtic will at least double the valuation of the player in the next few years.

It would be great to see Celtic clinch the title and the club to let us know this deal has been struck.
