South Korean journalist Paul Neat has given a flavour of the type of market which Celtic are entering after the signing of Oh Hyeon-gyu.

The 21-year-old has joined the Scottish champions on a 5-year deal and will hope to continue and develop during his time at the club.

Previously, the club had been linked to Cho Gue-sung who is also a South Korean internationalist but this looks to be the player Ange Postecoglou wanted.

Postecoglou first mentioned South Korea as a possible market that the club would be looking in back in December 2021 so it is evident that they waited until the right player came along.

In years gone by, only two South Korean internationalists have played for the famous green and white hoops, that being Ki Sung-yueng and Cha Du-ri.

Oh revealed that he remembers watching both players during there time at Celtic which was explained when CeltsAreHere spoke to Paul Neat as he discussed the potential for Celtic as a brand in South Korea.

“It’s massive. South Koreans are very proud of their country and their sportsman or athletes that play abroad,” said Paul Neat exclusively speaking to CeltsAreHere.

“All Celtic games will be on live tv now.

“Any South Korean who is playing abroad and certainly one who is involved in the national team and playing in a league in Europe. The companies here will buy the broadcasting rights for that league.

“I’m sure we’ll see more Celtic shirts. You do see the odd Celtic shirt, I’ve got a Korean whose got a few Celtic shirts which is maybe to do with the Ki Sung-yueng kind of thing but I’m sure we’ll see more of that.

“People will want to see him do well and it will be a big market. Hopefully they’ll even set up a Korean twitter account as well.”

Following on from the trip to Australia, it makes perfectly good sense for the club to spread their wings in other markets to compete against elite sides across world football.

The club have strong links all across the globe and since the arrival of Ange has once again strengthened that relationship in Japan and should also do so in South Korea as there can be so many more opportunities for Celtic’s brand to grow.
