There is still plenty of time left in the transfer window but journalist Pete O’Rourke has admitted that Celtic were interested in signing German defender Malick Thiaw from Schalke.

Ange Postecoglou confirmed during his pre-match press conference before the match against Ross County that the Hoops were still active in the market.

So far, the squad looks as though it has two players for each position but with so many games to play over the course along with injuries Postecoglou will want his side in as strong a position as possible.

With the departure of Nir Bitton during the summer, many Hoops fans are unsure whether Australian internationalist Aaron Mooy will be the chosen player to play deeper in midfield for the Hoops meaning that they rank this position as a priority on the shopping list.

Currently Celtic captain Callum McGregor tends to be the deeper midfielder but with Yosuke Ideguchi experiencing another injury along with transfer speculation around James McCarthy’s future the Scottish champions may look to sign another defensive midfielder.

“He was a target earlier this summer when Celtic were looking for central defensive reinforcements,” said Pete O’Rourke speaking to Givemesport.

“They’ve obviously brought in (Moritz) Jenz from France on loan, so maybe that lead is now not required to bring in a new centre-back.

“But I’m sure Celtic will be monitoring the situation, and if players were to leave the club or something opened up, that might be a move they might try and resurrect for Malick Thiaw.”

Christopher Jullien didn’t even feature on the bench for Celtic at the weekend with new arrival Moritz Jenz being given the nod to start along with Carl Starfelt returning to the bench after he suffered an injury on international duty.

If Jullien does depart this summer, Postecoglou may well look at another centre back but many believe there is still work to be done before the squad is fully complete and ready for the Champions League.
